TabbyCat guide

How it works

Plan a trip together or split one receipt. Keep everyone's share clear along the way.

For a group trip

  1. 1. Start a trip or group

Name it, set the dates, and pick a currency.

  2. 2. Invite your group

Share the invite. New people request to join, and the trip owner approves them before they can see trip details.

  3. 3. Add purchases

Record who paid, who shared the cost, and what each person had. Scan a receipt to help itemize it.

  4. 4. Settle up

See running balances and who can pay whom. Record payments as your group settles.

For one receipt

A Quick Tab is for splitting a single receipt, without setting up a trip.

  1. 1. Scan one receipt

The owner checks the items, tax, and total, then shares a link and code word.

  2. 2. Everyone picks their items

Friends enter their name and code word, then tag their portions. They don't need an account.

  3. 3. Review the split

The owner can adjust picks and add people who aren't using a phone.

  4. 4. Finalize the tab

Guests can return to see their final amount. Closing the tab disables its guest link.

Common questions

Do my friends need an account?

For a trip, friends sign in and the owner approves requests to join. For a Quick Tab, guests can use the shared link and code word without creating an account.

What if someone paid for the whole group?

Record that person as the payer and select who shared the purchase. TabbyCat shows each person's share and keeps the group's balances up to date.

Can we split just part of a receipt item?

Yes. On a Quick Tab, people can tag items in whole or half portions, and the owner can review and adjust picks before finalizing.

When can guests see their final Quick Tab amount?

Once the owner finalizes the tab, guests already on the tab can return through their link and code word to see their final total. A closed tab's link no longer works.

Does TabbyCat send payments?

No. It helps your group work out who owes what and track payments you mark as made. You pay each other outside TabbyCat.
